Sweetgrass and Fall Fire
Named after Sweetgrass Farms in Montana, where this variety originated, Sweetgrass are genetically similar to a Royal Palm but without the Narragansett gene n. Genotype is b'b'cgcg, a true breeding variety. With their bold colors and true breeding, the Sweetgrass is a very popular heritage turkey variety. In addition, they are a large variety with a nice, broad breast, making them a great meat bird that can breed naturally, unlike the commercial Broad-breasted White or Broad-breasted Bronze.
Fall Fire is a Sweetgrass with one red gene, they are overall more red than Sweetgrass and will produce 3 colors: Sweetgrass, Fall Fire, and Red Sweetgrass
Red Sweetgrass is a Sweetgrass with 2 red genes and is a true breeding variety, genotype b'b'cgcgrr
In 2020, I cut back on turkeys and only kept Sweetgrass out of these 3 colors. Sweetgrass will vary in color, some are darker, some are lighter, as the photos below show. I have kept 2 trios of Sweetgrass.
